The Sussex Historic Churches Trust Annual Ride & Stride raises funds for the repair and restoration of church buildings across Sussex. The event is open to everyone and encourages participants to visit churches throughout the county using any mode of transport – walking, cycling, running, riding, or driving.

Many churches open their doors for the day, providing an opportunity to explore Sussex’s historic places of worship while supporting their ongoing care. Funds raised are shared equally, with 50% going to the Sussex Historic Churches Trust and 50% going to the place of worship nominated by each participant.

Ride and Stride is the Trust’s largest fundraiser of the year and plays an important role in helping churches maintain their buildings for future generations.

How it works

Participants collect sponsorship from friends, family, or colleagues and then visit as many churches as they wish during the day. Sponsorship can be based on the number of churches visited or given as a flat donation. After the event, sponsorship money can be collected in person or online.

You can:

• Choose your own route

• Travel however you prefer

• Take part individually or in a group

• Visit as many or as few churches as you like

The event is open to all, and you do not need to attend church to take part.

Our Church and Ride & Stride

Members of St Andrew’s have taken part in Ride & Stride for a number of years, usually planning a local route to visit neighbouring churches.

Last year, participants followed a route around Storrington and West Chiltington, visiting several churches in the area. The year before, an eight mile route focused on Shoreham and Lancing, offering a different mix of churches and landscapes.

We also open our doors each year to welcome those following their own routes. Visitors are invited to stop at St Andrew’s, sign in, and take a short break. Refreshments are usually available, providing an opportunity to rest before continuing on to the next church.

All participation helps raise funds both for St Andrew’s and for the Sussex Historic Churches Trust.
